It measures the average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living. It has a high-income economy and has a high Human Development Index rating, ranking 14th in the world, it was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The UK remains a great power, with considerable economic, military and political influence internationally, it is sixth in military expenditure in the world. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic used to rank countries by level of "human development" and separate "very high human development", "high human development", "medium Over half of the world's population live in countries with "medium human development" (51%), while less than a fifth (18%) populate countries falling in the "low human development" category. Countries with "high" to "very high" human development account for slightly less than a third of the world's total population (30%). Norway, Australia, Switzerland and Germany lead the Human Development Index (HDI) rankings in 2016, eight European countries are in the top 10, followed by the two wealthy countries of North America, Canada and the US, and inbetween the only Asian country, Singapore. The Human Development Index was developed by the United Nations to measure human development in a country. HDI is quantified by looking at a country’s human development such as education, health and life expectancy. HDI is set on a scale from 0 to 1 and most developed countries have a score above .8. The economic historian Leandro Prados de la Escosura calculated the HDI over the course of 2 centuries, here termed the ‘Historical Index of Human Development’. This data is shown below to give a long run perspective on human development.
